The latest FAD in the tech world, and yes I called it a FAD is Jailbreaking. What Jailbreaking entails is that someone who owns an iPhone can use a security hole in the original software as a key to enable features that is not supported natively by the OS. For Android users it’s called Rooting, which essentially does the same thing. What is the draw for users to do this? Is it that we get board with the operating system? Some say that they want to get the most out of their device. Some also say, it’s my device, if I want to do this, I paid for it therefore I will do it. Do users realize the risks? Now I know this has been a huge topic of discussion as of late. We talked about it today on my show. Never before has it been so easy to jailbreak an iPhone. Where as rooting an Android device can be a bit more challenging. Now I can understand the point of view of unlocking, jailbreak, root a device before selling it. I get that. A lot of users don’t want to be locked to a particular carrier. Do you get the same functionality on an unsupported carrier as you do on the carrier the phone was designed for? As I myself have been tempted to jailbreak my iPad to enable multitasking, my better judgement doesn’t allow me to do so. I will just wait until the os has been updated to iOS4. Now I’m not bashing the jailbreak community, just call it a curiosity. Are the apps that we Jailbreak/root a device worth using that much, that we risk the stability of the OS and our phone?
