The World of Xbox 360

posted by The Tech Buzz on Aug.22, 2010, under News

For those of you who follow me you may have heard that I officially purchased an Xbox 360 console. Also as many of you know, I haven’t paid attention to the gaming market, until now. I’ve decided to expand my horizons and engage into some console gaming. Taking one step even further and getting Xbox Live (gamer tag thetechbuzz). There were a few games that came with my machine as I purchased it pre-owned from one of my youth who didn’t want it anymore. Gears of War one and two came with it as well as Wanted. At first I wasn’t sure about first person shooters. I never really got into them. I mean, I remember back in the days of Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, which I really enjoyed. I must say, I was curious. After doing a live show this past week Roland (rdfiedler on twitter) told me about Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. He said the game was realistic and incredible. Now not knowing much about the game, or what it entails, I set out to purchase this game. After buying it pre-owned from game stop and purchasing their pro account (for massive discounts and offers), I decided to give this a try. After playing it for about 10-20 mins and being invited into online game play I fell in love with this game. I couldn’t believe there was a world out there that I’ve not explored or ventured off into. The guys on the squad that I played with were all really nice. Of course I had my generic headset that comes with the 360 only to find myself purchasing a better one on ebay (new mind you) the next day. I can honestly say that this is now my favorite game.

Luxa2 H1-Touch

posted by The Tech Buzz on Aug.05, 2010, under News

Hey guys wanted to tell you about an AWESOME new product that I just received today from Luxa2 they make stands for your mobile devices. iPads, blackberrys, iPhones, Nexus Ones, HTC’s ext. I was very impressed first with the construction of the device. It has a six point system that holds your device snug with a sprocket type mechanism. The six points are covered with rubber to protect your device yet stable enough to hold it upside down and not have it fall out! The base is derived from an iMac, Cinema display type base which gives it that apple look and feel, complete with rubber padding on the bottom for a non-slip grip. The 360 degree swivel head gives it optimum viewing so your able to position your device to fit you’re viewing area. The solid construction of this holder gives it the “must buy” attention. If you’re looking for a holder for your mobile device on your desk, this is it! As someone who hosts a live show, this is perfect for me to show great apps on my Archos 5 Internet Tablet running Android OS or my iPhone 4. So make sure you check out Luxa2 and pick up the H1-touch. Look for my unboxing video here and review video soon! Again a great thanks to the folks at Luxa2 for sending this out! Get yours today HERE!

A Rooted Jailbreak!

posted by The Tech Buzz on Aug.03, 2010, under News

The latest FAD in the tech world, and yes I called it a FAD is Jailbreaking. What Jailbreaking entails is that someone who owns an iPhone can use a security hole in the original software as a key to enable features that is not supported natively by the OS. For Android users it’s called Rooting, which essentially does the same thing. What is the draw for users to do this? Is it that we get board with the operating system? Some say that they want to get the most out of their device. Some also say, it’s my device, if I want to do this, I paid for it therefore I will do it. Do users realize the risks? Now I know this has been a huge topic of discussion as of late. We talked about it today on my show. Never before has it been so easy to jailbreak an iPhone. Where as rooting an Android device can be a bit more challenging. Now I can understand the point of view of unlocking, jailbreak, root a device before selling it. I get that. A lot of users don’t want to be locked to a particular carrier. Do you get the same functionality on an unsupported carrier as you do on the carrier the phone was designed for? As I myself have been tempted to jailbreak my iPad to enable multitasking, my better judgement doesn’t allow me to do so. I will just wait until the os has been updated to iOS4. Now I’m not bashing the jailbreak community, just call it a curiosity. Are the apps that we Jailbreak/root a device worth using that much, that we risk the stability of the OS and our phone? These are questions I would like you the users to answer. If you have rooted your phone or jail broken it, leave a comment and tell me why you felt the need to do this? Until text time, keep it buzzin!

MIFI 2200 Review

posted by The Tech Buzz on Jul.30, 2010, under News

For those of you who watched my un-boxing of the MIFI 2200 courtesy of Virgin Mobile, have been wondering my thoughts on this device. Originally my overall thought of a MIFI type device was why do I need this when I have a phone that can tether? Well I’m going to tell you. Since I am an Apple iPhone 4 owner, and have been grandfathered into keeping my unlimited data plan, I found it to be a tough decision to give that up to tether to get internet access over a limited 3G area where I live. That’s where the option of the MIFI really plays a good role. Since Virgin Mobile offers a “Pay as you go” package it makes it a bit easier to justify getting the device without being locked into a contract. The initial cost of the device is $149 US and is no bigger than a credit card and about a quarter of an inch thick. The battery life is consistent with the claim of 4 hours. After testing this device using GPS I was surprised at how little the data usage which is great news! on a 3 hour round trip I only used 20 MBS after checking when I arrived home. Since this MIFI unit can charge while being plugged into a USB car charger adapter or a wall outlet it makes it even better of a choice over the competitions MIFI. I take the MIFI everywhere I go to get a “quick hit” on email or if I need to surf the web quickly on my iPhone. Since this runs on the Sprint network, I’ve tested this device in rural areas and farm land. Places AT&T 3G is …well … non-existant. In fact my wife’s grandmother, who up until now had been on dialup, has switched to this as her main source of internet because the speeds are faster.
